GENESIS

Author: Moses

Date: c. 1400 B.C. It is the first of the five books referred to as the Pentateuch called the Torah or Law. It was written during the exodus from Egypt. It is the foundational book for the entire Scripture, and is necessary for an understanding of Christ's mission.

Genesis means beginnings, it is a book about beginnings:

    1. Earth      1:1-2:3

    2. Mankind     2:4-25

    3. Sin    3:1-7

    4. Redemption  3:8-24

    5. Family life 4:1-15

    6. Civilization 4:16-9:29

    7. Nations     10:1-32

    8. Languages 11:1-9

I. FOUR GREAT EVENTS 1-11

    1. CREATION 1-2

The book starts off with an affirmation of truth. It is that in the beginning God created. There is no philosophical argument, no historical argument, no scientific argument, no natural argument, only the devine truth that God is and that he is responsible for all of creation. If a person can grasp and accept this one statement then they will have no problem wioth any other statements or miracles in the Bible.

This one statement sweeps away the six great doctrines of man:

[1] It refutes atheism, that there is no God.

[2] It refutes polytheism, many gods.

[3] It refutes fatalism, the doctrine of chance.

[4] It refutes evolution, the doctrine of infinte becoming.

[5] It refutes pantheism, that God and the universe are one.

[6] It refutes materialism, that matter is eternal.

Two distinctives of the creation are the fact that creation occurs by the word of God, which culminates in the living Word of John 1:1. Also is the fact that the creation was good. Seven times in chapter one it is recorded tha God said it was good; 1:4,10,12,18,21,25,31 (very good).

Six days of Creation:

[1] LIGHT - before the agents of light, God is the light of the world in the person of Christ (Matt. 4:16; John 1:3-9; also Rev. 21:23)      1:3

[2] SEPERATION OF THE WATERS 1:6-8

[3] LAND AND SEA PLANTS      1:9-13

[4] SUN, MOON, AND STARS     1:14-19

    [5] SEA LIFE, BIRDS          1:20-23

[6] ANIMAL LIFE AND MAN      1:24-31

    [7] GOD RESTED               2:1-3

In 2:7 we are told of the creation of man, and in 2:22 the creation of woman. While some would say that the accounts in chapter 1 and chapter 2 are different accounts, it is only the focus which is different. Chapter 1 focuses on God's creating while chapter 2 focuses on the creation itself.

In 2:7 we are intorduced to the name YHWH or Yahweh. It is transliterated as Jehovah or Lord and is the redemptive name of God.

In 2:24 we see the marriagerelationship quoted in Matt. 19:5; Mk. 10:7,8; I Cor. 6:16; Eph. 5:31.

Note 2:25 "They felt no shame"

He first questioned the word of God, and then sought to substitute self for God.

    The Three Basic Elements of the temptation;

[1] The lust of the flesh

[2] The lust of the eye

    [3] The pride of life

In 3:6,7 we see that they try to institute reconciliation through their own capabilities
